Noise #77, Venus and Jupiter, 2012, 70" x 46.75"
digital photograph mounted on aluminum
PLEASE JOIN US ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 3, 2015 @ 5PM FOR A RECEPTION AT JACKSON FLATS CELEBRATING "SELECTED WORKS",AN EXHIBITION OF RECENT WORK BY TWIN CITIES PHOTOGRAPHER TUCKER HOLLINGSWORTH. THE ARTIST WILL BE PRESENT.
On view at Artspace's new Jackson Flats building will be nine photographs, some measuring six feet in height, culled from Hollingsworth's various series. Non-representational and suggesting densely woven textiles, the vividly hued images investigate the terrain of what is called camera noise, or the interiority of the camera. They are visual records of the camera's internal digital process - how a camera works. "In essence, I am working inside the body of the camera," explains Hollingsworth. "The camera, not the outside world, is the producer of visual information. Any representational content is emptied from the image -- light spots or streaks are the only exterior reference points signaling the environment in which these images were produced." The Noise images explore the limits of digital photographic technology.
Also on view will be a selection of slightly earlier, landscaped-based photographs which were precursors to the Noise images and which Hollingsworth continues to make. Semi-representational and often characterized by a jewel-toned palette, the landscape photographs are taken at night in both urban and rural environments. Hollingsworth uses only ambient light whether it is the full moon, the head and tail lights of passing vehicles or street lamps for his extended exposures, some lasting up to 30 minutes.
